Back in Time: The Women’s Bathing Suit

Shopping for a bathing suit has never been easier, whether you’re looking for something that offers a little extra coverage or an excuse to show a little skin. Nowadays, stores sell everything from tummy-trimming designs to rash-resistant fabrics, so it’s great to have an idea of what you’re after from the outset so you don’t get overwhelmed by all the options. Some of today’s modern designs are unlike those the world has ever seen, while others pay homage to favorite styles from the past.

Back…to the Future?

Walk on virtually any American beach these days, and you’ll see the bikini on many a passerby. The two-piece became immensely popular throughout the 1960s as the “flower children” rebelled against society, and its impact is clearly visible today as so many women still wear one proudly. Many modern women also dress up those bikinis with hats, sunglasses, and other accessories in a move reminiscent of the 1950 Neo-Victorian Era, when women first began making a conscious effort to look their best at the beach.

The infographic below follows the progression of the women’s bathing suit over the years, from the times of Ancient Greece and Rome through the modern day. Take a look at how styles have changed, but also, to some degree, stayed the same. Can you spot any trends that remain popular to this day?
